SOAP

A huge component of Christian discipleship is engaging with the Word of God. We value the Bible and believe that it has the power to transform us and shape us into "authentic and credible followers of Jesus".

At Grace Church, we often use a devotional model for prayer and scripture reading called "SOAP". When we SOAP, we pick out a Scripture from our daily reading, we make an Observation, we write about an Application for our lives, and then we write a Prayer.  SOAP is one of many scripture reading models available which we can use to slow down and listen to the Holy Spirit as we read scripture.

Each month, the Grace Church family participates in SOAP devotions as we work our way through a Bible reading plan together. If you would like to participate in this Bible reading plan, stop by the Welcome Booth in the church lobby to pick up a bookmark with this month's scripture selections. You can also use SOAP with your current Bible reading plan.

how to "soap"

1) To SOAP, you will need a Bible, a journal, and a pen.

2) Download the reading plan.

3) Follow the steps below:

(S)cripture Find today's date in the Bible reading plan.  Take time reading and allow God to speak to you.  When you are done, look for a verse that particularly spoke to you and write it in your journal.

(O)bservation What do you think God is saying in this scripture?  Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you.  Paraphrase and write this scripture down, in your own words, in your journal.

(A)pplication Personalize what you have read by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now.  Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, revelation of a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life.  Write how this scripture can apply to you today.

(P)rayer This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you.
